In the 1982 film, the Wilderness World of Sigurd Olson, Sig walked through a grove of majestic pines, admiring their stature and beauty. He said that many people come to him searching for hope and asking what they can do to help protect wild places. He reached for a young pine, saying, you are like this sapling, and the whole world depends on you… just like it at one time depended on these huge old pines we see here.
In a rapidly changing world, we all need hope as we work to reduce the impacts of solving climate change, loss of biodiversity, and protect the integrity and values of wild and natural landscapes. People also need to sustain and renew their connections to nature
in new and thoughtful ways. Today more than ever, people are looking for hope and a way to make a difference. In the last few months, a small group of dedicated volunteers gathered to do just that and continue the important work of LoonWatch, Timber Wolf Alliance (TWA) and Sigurd Olson’s legacy.
Our goal is to maintain the vibrant outreach, citizen science and public policy work that SOEI has done in the Lake Superior Region and Chequamegon Bay area since 1971. We are also looking ahead, considering ways we can develop impactful programs for
the next 50 years. Our immediate plans include building back staffing and organizational capacity. We are currently in conversation with the Listening Point Foundation (Ely, Minnesota) and are working to establish partnerships that will enhance the work of both organizations and
create efficiencies in our processes and programs. In the next months we hope to launch a full fundraising campaign with a renewed mission and program plans. Already, we can thank the many supporters who have reached out during the past year offering skills and encouragement.
